A Guide To A Stylish Plus Size Life

Wear What You Love...

Dear Creatures Dress (here and here), Shoes-Old, Sweater-Talbots, Sunnies-Prada, Handbag-Louis Vuitton NeverfullGM

Let me preface this post by saying I, really, really, really love this dress. I looked for it at my local Anthropologie for weeks and hoped they could find my size since it was marked down to $29.99. I was all too excited when I found the dress hanging in the back of the sales department after I have given up all hope of having it in my possession. When I wore this dress to work I received a million compliments , but when I got ready to take blog pictures I questioned the way I looked in the dress. Was it too loose? Do I look huge? Does it make me look like a printed blimp? Yep, I went there with this dress, I let my fear of looking bigger than I am over shadow my love for a piece of clothing. It was a super scary digression to a very dark place that I used to personally reside in, and I had to take a breather to get back to a safe and happy place.  A friend encouraged me by saying it gave them a retro Miss Havisham vibe and that was all it took to get me back on the horse.

Often plus-size women are overwhelmed with headlines on how not to look fat, what’s most flattering for our figures, what colors look best, and frankly I find it oppressive and offensive. Though I am by no means into looking foolish for the sake of saying I wear what I want, I also don’t buy into the hype of following all the rules. Even if I drape myself in all black I am still going to look like a size 22, you know why cause my hips don’t lie! I say all of this to say that you should wear what makes you happy, if you love a dress but you think it’s too drapey, not your color or the print will overwhelm your body throw all of that out of the window if it makes you smile and giggle! We can’t take ourselves or our looks too seriously.

What’s the worst that could happen? You take a horrible blog picture? LOLOLOL! Y’all know I love your feedback is there something that sends you to a dark fashion place? Are you afraid to try certain styles because of your style? Let’s talk about it!

  1. I really love this dress for you. :)

For me, I've noticed that if I wear anything with pleats I am forever playing with them trying to make them sit just right. Even worse, if it is a material that needs to be ironed, I could get lost in the ironing room for a good couple of hours just trying to make sure everything is sitting in the right place. Therefore, pleats and I are not friends. :) Its not them, its me.

I will tell you the worst that can happen because it happens to me constantly - I have this work colleague who thinks her leggings can be worn as pants. I'm here to tell you hers cannot be. Not for fashion rules reasons but because they are so old and tatty and the material has worn so thin in the nether regions that I am forever greeted with her underwear as a surprise to myself whenever she bends over. Whenever she is assisting someone with an issue she will bend not at the knees but at the butt and flash the room. I did tell her that her leggings are getting a bit threadbare but she does not seem to care and finds it fairly hilarious especially when she flashes poor unsuspecting menfolk.

Me personally I love leggings but I am very careful to keep them in good repair and when buying new ones will make sure to take a flash photo in the dressing room to make sure the material can cover what it needs to cover. If they cannot do the job then either those leggings are for under dresses or tunics only, or they do not come home with me. This is really my only fashion rule, but it applies to regular pants as well because sometimes the material is so thin they are see through.

I believe that I buy fabulous underwear but I want to choose to whom I show it and when I show it. :) I do not want the entire office treated to my gorgeous leopard print matching set.

Just found your blog in my travels today and added you to my feed reader. This is a nice place you have here! :)

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! I am very happy that you like it! I am not a huge fan of legging for work. They do have to be kept up because they can wear out quickly. Also thanks for sharing your story!!!

  2. You look fabulous! I have been in the same boat for sure as far as being unsure about certain things because of my size and the "stigma" that I'm not supposed to wear that. I can say I've gotten pretty bold in the last year. It all started after I finally went through with the cutting of my hair for a second time. Very liberating!

    1. I am glad you were liberated! Liberation is the best! And your hair is so darn fabulous that I can see how it changed you! I think we all have to work really hard at the stigma that surrounds plus size fashion, it can be so daunting at times. As always thank you for your support Ashley!!!

  3. When you LOVE what you wear your personality shines thru and you will always look Great. I will not wear crop top and shorts not because I can't but because of leg veins and a fluffy stomach so, I wear capris and shorter tops and all is well in my kingdom. Love yourself from head to toe and you will live a long & happy life!!

  7. I used to do that all the time, now not so much. I'm starting to get the "I'll wear what I want" vibes, despite what society says I'm supposed to do or look like. And, BTW, I think that dress looks marvelous on you!
